  • Hi Laura,
Back in high school I took a few classes and learned to make jewelry. I then went on to college and majored in Photography and have had a very dry spell with work. I have now decided to start making some very plain and simple jewelry pieces and hope to sell them around my home in upstate New York.
I plan to solder sterling silver and gold and was wondering what my best bet is for building a solder station. I live between NYC and upstate and was hoping you could recommend a kit or list of things I need.

It would be such a great help! I really enjoyed watching your video, it brought me back to high school.

Ps. I attached my photography website.
    Thanks!

HI Jeanne- It’s so great to have you here! Yes, you’ll need a room that has some ventilation… I normally open a window in the warmer months, and keep a fan oscillating while I solder in the cold months. Some folks choose to wear safety goggles… I find they get in my way, so I don’t use them, but that is a safety call that you’ll have to make :)

In my soldering report you’ll find a list of all of the tools and supplies you’ll need to get started soldering with a torch. Most are pretty inexpensive and rather easy to get ahold of – I ordered most of them online. Good luck with your soldering! Send me some pics of some of your work! I’d love to see it!

  • I have not started to solder yet, but I have been wanting to close jump rings like that in your video. I have a cordless soldering iron kit and not anything else. I know I’m missing equipment. But it looks like I need a torch for that type of soldering, not an iron. See, us total newbies don’t know the first thing to soldering… a list of supplies needed, a list of tools needed, environmental conditions that should be present (ventilaion? just what is the definition of “good ventilation?”), safety gear… the whole gamut. I signed up for your newsletter and I look forward to reading your soldering report so I can get started!!
