Create a Ring from Sterling Silver Scrap

Have some scrap pieces of sterling silver sheet laying around, and you’re not quite sure what to do with it? You could melt it down into decorative silver balls and blobs, you could send it in to a metal seller in exchange for cash or store credit, OR you could do what I just did!

In this video I’m using 20 gauge sterling silver sheet.

I’m using a kitchen or plumbing torch using butane fuel.

The solder paste I’m using is easy silver solder paste.

Give this design a whirl! It was a blast to create! So unique, no two will ever be the same! And I LOVE that ;)
Hope your day is fabulous!

Thanks for the wonderful inspiration. I too share the fear of using a flame. Now I know I’m not alone: this is helpful! I’m headed out today to get a small butane torch. Don’t have silver solder yet. From what I can gather I will need hard solder, unless I use the flux solder product you mentioned (from cool tools) any suggestions?

  • Thanks so much for sharing! I’ve been ready to take the next step with my jewelry, but have found myself stalling out. Your videos are a fantastic resource!

i just like to thank you sharing this video. i’ve been watching tutorials on how to solder and play with metal, but most of the time, they use the small torch on tanks which look way too scary (not to mention expensive), so i’m very scared to try. after I watched your video, I was really inspired and realized that butane torch can really work. so, i bit the bullet and purchased a butane torch and some silver. i was sooo scared to start the torch and i think i read the instructions atleast 5 times, but after i lit it, the 2nd and 3rd and 4th feels like i’ve been lighting torches all the time (haha!). i was so excited seeing the silver connect. i unintentionally melted a lot in the process but even that was fun too! i will probably make stud or disk earrings out of the melted silver once i’ve successfully attached an earpost to it! i will send you a photo of my first piece inspired by you! thank you so much again!

Yes! I felt the same with those big torches… I will get one someday, just haven’t needed it yet! So glad you’re making wonderful new pieces! You’ll have to share them sometime so we can see them! Melting is blast, I agree ;) Have fun!

Hi, I was wondering if your sheet was “spring hard” “dead soft” or “1/2 hard”. Also, I tried to register for your newsletter but it says it’s down and to contact you to make you aware of it. So yeah, thanks!
