How to Mold Antique Buttons for Jewelry Components

A beautiful way to create unique components for your jewelry is to mold designs from antique buttons! Thanks to my husband’s mother and grandmother, I now have a stash of fabulous old buttons – some dating back to the early 1900’s! Lately I’ve been obsessed with making rings, earrings, and pendants by using the designs from some of these buttons – check out how I create my molding…

This molding compound is amazing! I use this stuff all the time.

ps… when I say “send me a piece you’ve molded” – I mean send me a pic! I wanna see some of the work you’ve been slaving over!

Have you used antique buttons in any of your pieces? Is this sparking any ideas for you? If so – share! What else would you mold to create a jewelry component for your next piece?

Feel free to leave a link to your blog or shop as always! And don’t forget to join us on Facebook and share some creative juju with your friends ;)

PS… If you’re ready to learn more about creating silver jewelry, ready to learn to solder silver (like the silver button ring in the video above!), then I’d love for you to join us in the Apprenticeship Program!

I usually buy my mold compound from either of the 2 large craft stores. They always have 40% off coupons and I find that it’s a bit cheaper, especially on the shipping charges alone.

  • Thank you, Laura! :) This is a fantastic idea, however I am going to be de-stashing my antique buttons very soon! Sad but true. I am feeling a bit overwhelmed by my stuff and not getting as much done as I would like. So, out with stash of buttons, yarn, ribbon, beads, and more! I will be posting on my blog very soon to let everyone know. You may want the buttons, just let me know. ;)

Ok, so I am LOVING these videos. :) So, after you make these molds you use them with the PMC, is that right? I have so many questions, I want to just pick up the phone and just call. LOL. I’m interested in the silver PMC but haven’t used it before and am nervous about the edges of the finished piece. Do you cut/file/or how do you get it so smooth? I’d love to see you do a PMC video and also one for thicker bands as I mentioned before. :D THANK YOU for these videos! They are realllllllly helpful!
